How Do You See Church?

Sometimes the church can lose her way. She can get caught up in things that either don’t matter or make her something different than what her Master intended. For example, there are some who believe…

  • The Church is a Destination.
  • The Pastor is a Performer.
  • The People are an Audience.

This view of church reinforces the consumeristic, soul-shrinking spirit of the age. It might even make for large congregations, a good name in the community, and the accolades of other congregations. However, it’s far from what the church should look like when she’s on mission. When on mission…

  • The Pastor(s) is an Equipper.
  • The People are Ministers & Missionaries.

When these are true the church is more apt to be what God intended her to be. She becomes more like a movement of men and women, boys and girls, young and old, rich and poor, sent into the world to share with that world the hope of the world.

So, one way you can discover if you’re about the mission of Christ or something else is by asking a simple question: How do you see your church, your pastor, and yourself?
